UNIT 8: MATERIALS AND MACHINES!!!
Today we´re going to start a new unit of science. You can still continue with the TEST of the last unit if you have not finished.
Are you ready?? OK.
- MATERIALS
To warm up we´re going to watch this video:
Metal, plastic, wood, glass... just some of the materials we use to make the things that surround us. Materials are the matter or substance that objects are made from.
We use a wide range of different materials daily; these might include:
- metal
- plastic
- wood
- glass
- ceramics
- synthetic fibres
- composites (made from two or more materials combined together)
- Now you can read your science book in pg. 80 and 81.
- Examples of natural materials:
- From plants: Cotton, hemp, wood...(algodón, cáñamo o madera...)
- From minerals: Marble, granite, gold...( marmol, granito, oro...)
- From animals: Wool, leather, silk...(lana, cuero, seda...)
- Examples of man-made materials:
- Paper: the raw material is wood
- Iron: A mixture of diferent minerals (hematite and magnetite)
- Plastic: the raw material is petroleum
ACTIVITIES (In your notebook)
- Name 3 natural materials and 3 man-made ones
- What man- made material is obtained from wood?
- What are the raw materials for iron and plastic?
And now... Activity book pg 32. Exercises 1 and 2.
Ahora, por si tienes alguna duda, aqui va un video sorpresa!!!! para que os ayude:
- PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
Materials have different features, or properties, which make them suitable for different uses. Watch this video.
The main properties of materials are:
- Transparency ---------------------} Transparencia
- Hardness/Softness--------------} Dureza o suavidad
- Elasticity/ Flexibility...............} Elasticidad y Flexibilidad
- Lustre: Shiny/Dull---------------} Brillo o mate
- Waterproof ------------------------} Impermeabilidad
